PORTILLO’S (CHICAGO, IL)

Besides real deep-dish pizza, we had also never eaten Chicago-style hot dogs before. We heard that Hot Doug’s is the best, but we couldn’t make it out there so we went to nearby Portillo’s instead. The food was good and cheap, and we ended up eating there three times during our stay in Chicago. (We have no shame.)

A Chicago-style hot dog consists of the following (it sounds a lot weirder than it actually tastes):

  • All-beef frankfurter
  • Poppy seed bun
  • Yellow mustard (no ketchup!!!)
  • Chopped white onions
  • Sweet pickle relish (which we’ve heard is often dyed neon-green)
  • A dill pickle spear
  • Tomato slices or wedges
  • Pickled sport peppers
  • A dash of celery salt

Since then, we’ve tried to recreate Chicago-style hot dogs on our own, but it just isn’t the same.
